Scenes from Pain & Gain.
Based on the unbelievable true crime story, director Michael Bay makes this Coen brothers-esque drama on steroids about dumb criminals from the ’90s his own. It may be excessive and overlong but remains an amusingly dark, disturbing tale as Bay shows the faintest of restraint while doubling down, indulging his boyish sense of humour. Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie serve as solid comedic foils, but it’s Dwayne Johnson who truly steals the show as the well-meaning yet dim, Jesus loving, cocaine addled fitness freak member of the Sun Gym gang.
